How to maintain a lock?
How to properly maintain a lock?
Your lock has a very
important role in your security. Without it, your apartment or house would be
at the mercy of burglars. A lock that is poorly maintained is a lock that, over
time, can quickly become defective. Here are some tips for maintaining your
lock.
- Check your lock and door
First of all, a few
small checks are necessary before applying any kind of anti-seize or other
products.
Remember to check that
the door is properly fixed to the frame. A well-fixed door is a
well-aligned and straight door. If ever your door is not well fixed or sags,
enormous pressure will be felt on the bolt of the lock. This will very quickly
cause your lock to fail.
Then checking the
hinges is essential. Ensure that the hinges show no signs of fatigue and are
still firmly attached to the door and the frame.
The final verification
step is to check the latch bolt and the deadbolt.
The latch bolt and
deadbolt must be perfectly aligned with the striker plate so that the deadbolt
fits snugly into the striker plate.
- Lock maintenance
After carrying out the
checks of the lock and the door, if everything is in good condition, regular
maintenance of the lock is necessary to guarantee the correct operation of the
lock.
But be careful;
maintenance is not done just anyhow!
Here are some tips for
maintaining your lock:
- Using a compressed air spray, blast impurities
and grime into the cylinder.
- Then use a degreasing spray to oil
everything (be careful not to abuse it).
- If it gets stuck, try all the same to put a
drop of oil on your key to facilitate entry.
Note that daily washing and maintenance are not recommended.
However, it is more
than recommended to hire a professional for the complete
maintenance of your door lock.
